How to Detox, Lying Down

We swear by its healing properties: An hour spent in an infrared sauna can alleviate the symptoms associated with arthritis, rid your body of toxins, and can even mimic the cardiovascular activity of a 2-3 mile run in just under an hour’s exposure (!). But, before you beeline for your gym’s steam room, know that soaking in infrared heat is an entirely different type of experience than in your run-of-the-mill bath house staple.

Infrared heat penetrates directly into the skin instead of simply heating the air around you which means that you can experience the beneficial effects of a detoxifying sweat in a much shorter period of time (that means no more overheating or gasping for air). It also means, an infrared sauna uses up to 90% less energy than needed to heat a typical hammam.

And while some frequent the sauna to kickstart minor weight loss, there are others who are unable to participate in traditional forms of exercise that rely on the infrared sauna’s heart-pumping benefits. Us? We’re in it to achieve deep detoxification in the time it takes to watch an episode of Downton Abbey.

Our favorite Los Angeles-based hotspots:

The Sweat Shop LA

A NYC-transplant, The Sweat Shop LA is a ‘holistic detox day spa’ that focuses on detoxing and ridding the body of chemicals, heavy metals, and excess fat. Look forward to the special reverse osmosis alkaline water served in sustainable bottles and try to convince us that sweating never seemed more relaxing.
