RE: California must act to protect salon workers from harmful chemicals
Dear Members of the California State Legislature,
I write as the founder of Beautycounter, a company that is a leader in the safer skin care and cleaner cosmetics category. While today, our Consultants number more than 24,000 women sharing our message and products across the U.S., our origins are far more humble: my search for safer products for my family.

Did you know that around 85% of breast cancers are not linked to family history? That means, in many cases, there are steps that can be taken to reduce risk. For the last three years, Beautycounter has been working hard to improve cosmetic safety regulations—in our home state of California, in Oregon, and on the national level. We’ve made much progress, yet we know the more voices that fight for this mission, the stronger the impact will be. That’s why we’re so excited to announce our newest advocacy initiative: the Counteract Coalition.

While many of you know me as a CEO and entrepreneur, my most important job is being a mom. During preparations for our baby line launch, I asked the Beautycounter team to share stories of their early days as parents. Some of these stories made us laugh, and others reminded me of what I wish I’d known then. I hope some of these tips help to make the early days a bit better and safer, for you and your baby.

Three years ago, Beautycounter’s mission to get safe products into the hands of everyone was born. From the start, we wanted to make safer skin care and cosmetics that performed better than the products you had come to trust. As if that wasn’t a big enough goal, we’ve also made it our mission to push for reform in the outdated beauty industry. In our third year, we’ve made some serious strides—including our team’s visit to Washington, D.C., last fall, where we hosted a congressional briefing and met with Senate offices to tell our Beautycounter story and the need for change.
We may be celebrating our third birthday, but instead of balloons, we’d love better beauty laws. In lieu of cake, we request change. And rather than presents, we want all products made without potentially harmful ingredients. We’d love for you to celebrate our anniversary by joining us in asking Congress to prioritize safe beauty. At Beautycounter, we work just as hard to champion progress in the personal care industry as we do to create our own safer, high-performing products. That’s why our team visited Washington, D.C., last fall to host a congressional briefing and discuss beauty industry reform with our country’s leaders. “We wanted to send a really clear message to say now is the time for Congress to take on safe skin care,” explains Lindsay Dahl, our Director of Policy & Partnerships. Watch the video below to get an inside perspective on our important trip to Capitol Hill. When you’ve finished watching, share this with your friends and encourage them to join our movement for better beauty.

Our Founder and CEO, Gregg Renfrew, has always advocated for the empowerment of women—in fact, Beautycounter has provided economic opportunities to thousands of women across the country through our Consultant program—and she recently shared her dedication to this idea at the annual Massachusetts Conference for Women. There, Gregg also revealed some of the key lessons she’s learned over the years, including how she balances her personal and professional lives (a constant work in progress for the wife and mother!). “I think you can have everything, but I don’t think you can have everything all at once,” she said. Watch to see what she had to say on female entrepreneurism, following your passions, and more.

A few weeks ago, Congress took an important step toward cleaning up the personal care industry: It banned plastic microbeads from products such as exfoliators, toothpaste, and body wash. We took a moment to celebrate this victory, and you should too! It’s a clear sign of Washington, D.C.’s appetite for change in the outdated beauty industry.
