5 Packing Hacks You Need to Know Now

Your days off are approved, and your itinerary is set. Now all you have to do is pack—one of our least favorite tasks when it comes to traveling. Whether you’re hitting the road for a weekend trip or preparing for a long-haul flight this summer, you’ll need all your beauty essentials intact at your final destination, no matter how rough the traveling conditions. Check out this list of clever, useful beauty packing tips from professional organizer Barbara Reich of Resourceful Consultants. Bon voyage!

A little packing savvy goes a long way when it comes to maximizing space and ensuring nothing breaks. “Pack delicate items, like the Lustro Face Oils, inside something soft (such as a scarf or a T-shirt), then place that inside shoes for additional cushioning,” Barbara says. As for your makeup bag, “the best place to pack your cosmetics in your suitcase is in the middle so they’re cushioned by other items, or in a separate shoe compartment if you have one.”

2. Protect Your Powders

To avoid your powder cosmetics shattering or breaking, try this simple trick: “Cut a small square of tissue the size of your powder or eye shadow compact, then place it in the compact in order to prevent breakage,” Barbara says. The tissue acts as a shock absorber, helping the product stay in place en route.

3. Use Double-Duty Products

“Instead of bringing a separate blush and lip color, pack a joint lip and cheek product. This way you’ll stay in the same color family and save room,” Barbara says. We suggest bringing our Color Pinch Cream Blusher, which serves as a hydrating two-in-one lip and cheek color, and our Dew Skin Moisturizing Coverage, a tinted skin treatment with SPF 20.

4. Tape Your Liquids

“Put a small piece of duct tape on any product that has a chance of leaking, like shampoos and lotions,” Barbara says. Taking a few minutes to seal your liquid products is worthwhile so they don’t stain your belongings later on.

5. Repurpose a Pencil Case

If cleaned regularly and stored properly, cosmetics brushes can last for years. But when you’re packing, brushes are often overlooked and tossed in your makeup bag with other products, so bristles are bent, flattened, or distorted upon arrival. To keep brushes in pristine condition, “packing them separately in a pencil case would work,” Barbara says.
