It’s hard not to geek out about the Consumer Electronics Show, the biggest and most renowned tech event in the world. Tens of thousands of people make the pilgrimage to Las Vegas every year to learn about the latest in electronics and technology, and thanks to floating speakers and intelligent skateboards, this year’s CES didn’t disappoint. In addition to these cool gadgets, however, there were also plenty of practical innovations focused on energy efficiency and designed to help create a greener, safer home—a concept that we at Beautycounter can certainly get behind.
For example, San Diego-based Brio introduced a smart—and purportedly safer—outlet that only delivers power when something’s plugged in and requires electricity. In other words, the outlet may be ideal for kid-proofing your house, since it can distinguish between a hair dryer and a child’s finger. Another CES standout? Sensibo, which “smartens” any existing air conditioner. Operated via your smartphone app, the Sensibo pod allows you to remotely control your unit’s settings; it can also detect if a room is unoccupied and turn off your unit accordingly to conserve energy and save money. The company even claims Sensibo can save you up to 40% on your bills over time—meaning that it just might take priority over a floating speaker.
