Our Commitment to Safety and Transparency

A MESSAGE FROM ROB STEERE, HEAD OF OPERATIONS

Bringing truth to beauty is at the core of our mission and we believe transparency is key to creating positive change in the industry. That’s why we want you to know that we’ve issued a voluntary recall of one of our products after learning that it did not meet our high standards.

Through our quality assurance and product testing processes, we discovered that one lot (Lot #1626003) of our Nourishing Day Cream contained a bacteria called Pluralibacter gergoviae. This lot includes the 1.65oz Nourishing Day Cream (sold and recalled in the US), and the 1.5oz Nourishing Day Cream (sold and recalled in the US and CAN), which was a part of the “Our Favorites for Your Favorite” 2016 Holiday gift set.

The FDA, Health Canada, and all purchasers have been notified about the affected product.

Pluralibacter gergoviae (formerly known as Enterobacter gergoviae) has been found in places such as soil, wet environments and vegetation, and may be considered an opportunistic pathogen. This means that individuals with weakened immune systems, who suffer from a serious pre-existing condition, who have been treated surgically, or belong to another sensitive group of persons may be at particular risk of infection.

Beautycounter has only received one complaint where an individual’s skin became red and irritated, (though this complaint noted that the Nourishing Day Cream was used with another product and the cause of the redness and irritation has not been confirmed.

After a thorough investigation of our supply chain, we believe the contamination occurred at the facility of our product manufacturer. Recent tests suggest that the bacteria was introduced to the bulk formula during the transfer from the mixing tank to the filling machines. Re-tests of previous and subsequent lots of this product returned clean results, suggesting that this is an isolated incident.

While no other Beautycounter products are affected by this recall, Beautycounter takes any indication of potential quality or health issues very seriously. We are working in conjunction with our manufacturer to confirm the proper safety, cleaning, and production processes are in place to ensure that this bacteria is not present within its facilities. We expect our manufacturers to meet our safety standards, so that all Beautycounter consumers can remain confident in our commitment to provide only the safest, high-performing products on the market.

If you think you may have purchased a product from this lot, but have not received notification, please call 1-888-988-9108 to speak with a representative from our team.
